As we approach our Strings and Serenades concert in a few weeks, we spoke with cellist Toby White about the pieces he's excited to perform and the inspirations that have shaped his musical journey.

When did you start playing the Cello, and who has inspired you along the way?

I first picked up a cello at the age of 4. I am very lucky to have had wonderful teachers in my life who remain a constant inspiration. My family in their own way has always supported me and encouraged me to follow my passion which really helped me in that initial pursuit of a musical career.

I grew up with a huge collection of Jacqueline Du Pré recordings which I suppose really sparked my love of performing. Nowadays I am fortunate enough to work alongside incredible musicians who remain a constant stream of inspiration everyday.

What do you love most about playing in an orchestra?

For me, it has to be the power and the versatility of an orchestra. You can’t help but be swept up and carried along which is one of the most joyous feelings as a performer.

The music is extraordinary and when everyone is engaged and working together it feels like anything is possible.

What music do you like listening to beyond classical?

Excellent question! If you looked at my Spotify you’d think it was a shared family account - there are so many different things on there. I love everything from jazz fusion to film scores to 70’s prog rock.

If it’s got a good beat and a groovy baseline, I’m happy!

What instrument do you secretly long to play?

I so wish I was able to play the piano. I did try for many years, but always struggled to get any good at it.

Now I just don’t have the time to practise it, but if I could go back and change one thing about my musical upbringing I would work harder on my piano skills.

What piece are you most looking forward to playing in the Strings and Serenades programme on 18th October?

I am most looking forward to the Britten Serenade. I first played this piece as a teenager in North Yorkshire, where I’m from, with our local amateur orchestra. An old friend and ex-chorister who I’d sung with as a boy came back to sing the tenor part, and I was just so blown over by the piece.

I haven’t played it since, but I can’t wait to explore it again - especially with our incredible soloists Ben Goldscheider and Toby Spence.

Tickets are on sale for our Strings and Serenades programme on Fri 18 Oct, 19:30pm.
